Poultry

Backyard poultry was once a way of life for many Australian households, in our modern "go go go" society it has fallen out of favour with many.

There is still a small part of the population that love keeping chooks for eggs and meat. For me at least my chooks are mainly for egg production. Once they stop laying they made end up on the dinner table via the slow cooker to tenderise them. There's no such thing as a free ride in backyard farming.

Our brood of hens consists of 3 Australorps, 2 Chinese Bantams and 1 Rhode Island Red/white Leghorn crosses. Our chook pen was actually a cubby house kit that we got off eBay. With some modification it makes an ideal chicken coop. One that you can stand in to do work, something you will appreciate once you have to clean it out.

At present we are averaging 5 eggs per day, so no more buyinh eggs for us. After having fresh eggs you soon realise the store purchaed ones just don't compete.
